BILL FERSTER'S VIDEOGRAPHICS NEWSWIRE
ISSUE 99-20, 7/23/99

NEWSWIRE TO END

I have enjoyed publishing this NewsWire for the past 3 years, but it falls in a difficult economic space for me. It is too expensive and specialized to appeal to a mass market, and yet the combination of price and limited universe of paying subscribers makes it a poor return on investment for the amount of time it takes to write. You can visit my website for more information, as well as read and search past issues of this NewsWire, at http://www.stagetools.com/bill. I appreciate your subscribing and hope it has been useful to you.

ONLINE NEWSWIRE SOURCES

The web offers a wide range of sources for news about our industry. There is a lot of repetition among these sites, but seeing an item reported from different perspectives makes you understand its potential impact better. In the spirit of teaching fishing, here are the ones I used daily to gather material for the NewsWire:

--> WALL STREET JOURNAL

The Wall Street Journal has an excellent online edition, which costs $59 per year or $29 you already subscribe to the print edition. (http://interactive.wsj.com/edition/current/summaries/front.htm)

---> THE WAVE REPORT

I have probably gotten more good information on the 3D and VideoGraphics worlds from the Wave Report than from any other single source. It can be accessed from their website, or via a steady stream of emails. (http://www.wave-report.com)

--> CMP TECHWEB

Major technical publisher CMP (EE Times, Dr. Dobbs, Windows Magazine, etc.) publishes a list of tech articles in the news for each day in a single line list that links to full text of the stories. (http://www.techweb.com/wire/allstories.html)

---> NY TIMES

The New York Times is a good source of generalized tech doings and while the site is free, you will need to register. (http://www.nytimes.com/yr/mo/day/tech/index7day.html)

---> DIGITAL PRODUCER MAGAZINE

Lew Wallace's Digital Producer site is a great source for information on the VideoGraphics world and is updated daily. (http://www.digitalproducer.com)

---> CREATIVE PLANET

Creative Planet is a Hollywood-based site that summarizes stories in the news that might interest creative professionals. (http://creativeplanet.com/scripts/cp.exe?get?http://CreativePlanet.com/Week InReview/Main.s html)

---> SAN JOSE MERCURY

The San Jose Mercury News was one of the first newspapers to put their material online and offers two excellent daily recaps. (http://www.mercurycenter.com/svtech/reports/gmsv/) and (http://www.mercurycenter.com/svtech/news/indepth)

---> ZD NET Publishing

czar Ziff Davis's site has general computer news item that may be of interest. (http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn)

---> SLASHDOT NEWS

Their motto is "News for Geeks that Matters" pretty much sums up this Linux-centric web-zine. There are occasionally interesting tidbits that don't crop up anywhere else. (http://www.slashdot.org)

---> NEWSPAGE

NewsPage is a free service that will allow you to set criteria and have a customized "newspaper" delivered via email, or from their website. (http://www.newspage.com)
