***Ambient Signs PLC License Agreement with Chilean Utility
(April 15)
Ambient Corporation, a developer of powerline communications
technology (PLC), announced today that Compania Americana de
Multiservicios Ltda., (CAM), subsidiary of Enersis, a Chile-based
provider of electrical power, will evaluate Ambient's PLC
technology. Enersis has subsidiaries is Argentina, Colombia,
Peru, and Brazil, and services more than 10 million customers.
CAM is 100 percent owned by Enersis S.A., which is itself 65
percent owned by Endesa, the largest utility in Spain.
Under terms of the deal, Ambient will provide CAM the couplers
necessary for the utility to convert a portion of Enersis
overhead power distribution network into a broadband data
pipeline. The agreement provides for joint installation and
testing of Ambient's products on Enersis medium and low voltage
lines.
The two companies will conduct a trial deployment in Santiago,
Chile. In a first short stage, the trial will focus on pure data
transmission through a 12 kV medium tension network, in order to
test a possible future deployment of part of a telecommunications
backbone using Ambient's technology. A second stage will involve
a substation that ties into the fiber-optic data stream, and will
distribute data on a 12 kV circuit serving about 180 homes, small
business and stores. Installation will begin later this month and
is expected to be completed during the month of May. The
evaluation will last throughout 2003, and the deal will generate
fee income for Ambient this quarter.
CAM has been operating a PLC trial in Santiago since March 2002,
in which a group of volunteers has had broadband Internet access
and voice over IP service, in a commercial neighborhood. This
trial is being performed by CAM on the power distribution grid
operated by Chilectra, an electric utility 98% owned by Enersis.
CAM stated that Internet access service quality in this trial has
had a 98% "good or excellent" evaluation, according to customer
surveys, and data transmission rates reach up to symmetric
up/down 10 Mbps to the final customers. CAM believes this trial
demonstrates that PLC deployment in Chilectra's power
distribution grid is both technically and commercially viable.
Final decision to start the commercial rollout of PLC in Santiago
during this year is expected soon.
This deal for Ambient builds on similar announcements with
Southern Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Company,
and Consolidated Edison Company of New York.
