***Amperion Unveils Integrated Powerline-WiFi Broadband Access
Solution
(February 26)
Amperion, Inc., a provider of medium-voltage powerline
communication (PLC) equipment, today unveiled both the Amperion
Connect Powerline system and PowerWiFi access. The Amperion
Connect system offers a suite of hardware and software products
designed to enable broadband access, backhaul, and internal
utility services over the electric powerline network. PowerWiFi
access links the powerline network to end users via an 802.11b
connection.
Amperion believes that implementing their PLC technology on the
existing power infrastructure will give utilities new streams of
revenue and enhanced methods of managing their network. Service
providers can apply a "smart-build" approach on utility power
lines to reach all customers, possibly including those previously
unreachable due to economics or technology. The reach of WiFi and
the fact that medium-voltage power lines are located within a few
hundred meters of every home and business, combine for a unique
cost effective and pervasive service architecture, according to
Amperion.
Amperion employs the latest technology in WiFi, and augments this
with its own layer of privacy and security. Employing 802.11b as
the customer interface is intended to deliver economies of scale,
lowest cost per home passed, and broad availability. Amperion
states that their Connect product line is one of the few
technologies that provides sufficient backbone throughput and
reach to support multiple 802.11b networks.
Amperion's medium voltage powerline technology integrates with
other access technology, including low voltage-powerline,
HomePlug standardized equipment, DSL and others. Amperion decided
to use WiFi technology to provide access because they feel it is
the safest and most effective mechanism to delivery broadband to
the widest range of customers.
Today's announcement culminates years of product development,
business modeling, and deployment on medium-voltage power lines.
The Amperion Connect system is now available to electric
Utilities and Network Operators interested in deploying Powerline
enabled broadband services.
Amperion develops networking hardware and software that enables
the delivery of high-speed broadband data over medium-voltage
powerlines. Established in June 2001, investors include American
Electric Power, Cisco Systems, Inc., and Redleaf Group, Inc.
