***Proxim Receives Wi-Fi Certification for 802.11a/b AP and Card
(January 20)
Proxim Corporation, a provider of wireless local area networking
(WLAN) and wireless wide area networking (WWAN) products, today
announced that its ORiNOCO AP-2000 with 5 GHz Kit and the ORiNOCO
802.11a/b ComboCard received certification from the Wi-Fi
Alliance in its first round of 802.11a-specific certification
testing. The Wi-Fi Alliance certifies that the products
interoperate fully with other 802.11a-based products.
The ORiNOCO AP-2000 is a dual-channel wireless bridge that
provides concurrent support for networks based on both 802.11a
and 802.11b (Wi-Fi). The ORiNOCO 5 GHz Kit consists of an 802.11a
CardBus card with attached high gain dual diversity antennas that
slips directly into one of the slots of the AP-2000. According to
Proxim, the AP-2000 offers enterprises configuration flexibility,
increased network capacity and security, including IEEE 802.1x
with user based authentication and automatic WEP key
distribution. The ORiNOCO ComboCard provides access to either an
802.11b or 802.11a wireless network, taking advantage of 54 Mbps
speeds and high bandwidth on an 802.11a network, and seamlessly
transitioning to established 802.11b networks.
With certification, the AP-2000 and ComboCard are granted a "seal
of interoperability" that will notify customers that they have
passed the Wi-Fi Alliance's tests. The goal of the Wi-Fi Alliance
is to ensure interoperability among products from multiple
manufacturers, so it conducts independent testing of vendor
solutions. The AP-2000 and ComboCard were tested with a variety
of other vendors' solutions.
The AP-2000 with 5 GHz kit and the 802.11a/b ComboCard are
currently available worldwide through Proxim's network of
resellers.
