***Philips Puts Bluetooth in Compaq's Pocket PC Expansion Pack
(January 29)
Philips Components, a division of Royal Philips Electronics, of
the Netherlands, today announced that Compaq Computer Corp., a
manufacturer of Windows-powered Pocket PCs, is using Philips'
embedded Bluetooth technology in its newly introduced Bluetooth
Expansion Pack for the iPAQ Pocket PC H3700 and H3600 Series
products. In addition, Compaq now offers the iPAQ Pocket PC
H3870 model, which includes an embedded Bluetooth slot. These
new Bluetooth solutions, which encompass hardware and software,
provide iPAQ Pocket PC users wireless connectivity while
retaining the signature iPAQ design for portability. In
addition, these Bluetooth capabilities also make the Secure
Digital slot available for memory expansion.
Philips' solution enhances previous iPAQ Pocket PC capabilities
by featuring embedded software that enables Bluetooth
functionality. Philips' total Bluetooth solution allows users to
share files, synchronize databases, connect to the Internet or
exchange business cards with users of other Bluetooth devices
such as mobile phones, PDAs and notebook computers. The package
also includes a user interface to aid in set up for novice and
advanced users.
Today's news follows on the heels of Philips Components'
announcement in early October that its Bluetooth Compact Flash
card supports Windows-Powered Pocket PC 2002 software, utilized
in Compaq's new iPAQ lines. In addition, Philips' Compact Flash
card supports the complete suite of Bluetooth functions, which
allows for connectivity with other Bluetooth-enabled devices for
a full range of applications.
Philips' latest Bluetooth solution has already begun shipping
with Compaq's newest line of iPAQ Pocket PCs.
