***NEC and SnapTrack Develop Chipset for Wireless Location
Information Services
(February 2)
According to TelecomWorldwire, NEC and SnapTrack, a subsidiary of
QUALCOMM, have jointly developed a chipset designed to enable the
integration of location information services into mobile handsets
and other wireless devices. The uPD77533 chip uses SnapTrack's
Wireless Assisted global positioning system technology to provide
positioning even inside or between buildings.
Other features include low power consumption and compact plastic
packaging to enhance the chipset's portability. NEC plans to
offer the chipset to mobile terminal manufacturers wishing to
offer value-added services based on a user's location
information. The value- added services could include emergency
location, navigation services, tailored e-commerce services and
location specific business and entertainment information.
