***Blackout in Hsinchu Science Park
(December 26)
A total of 10 companies at the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial
Park suffered from the power outage at some of their factories on
Monday evening, December 25th, between 6:04 p.m. and 8:02 p.m.,
according to a statement released by the Taiwan Power Co.
According to Taiwan Power's official, the outage was caused by a
malfunction in generating equipment at a Macronix plant, which
triggered a disruption at a nearby transmission station that
supplies electricity to the industrial park.
Power was back to the effected plants of these companies after
8:02 p.m., except for Macronix's No. 2 fab. While the power
outage was occurring, Taiwan semiconductor foundry United
Microelectronics (UMC) turn-on their three self-installed
generators which later caught fire. No injuries were reported in
the incident but UMC estimated their losses at US$903,778 after
the fire.
