***Globalstar USA Announces Completion of Final Gateway Serving
the United States
(January 20)
Globalstar USA, in conjunction with Globalstar Canada, has
announced the completion of its gateway based in High River,
Alberta, Canada. The end of construction on the gateway marks the
completion of the ground stations serving the United States and
Canada on the Globalstar system. The two other gateways are
located in Clifton, Texas and Smiths Falls, Ontario.
Gateways are an integral part of the Globalstar ground segment.
Each Globalstar gateway receives signals from orbiting
satellites, processes calls, and switches signals to the
appropriate landline or cellular network. Strong encryption helps
ensure voice and signaling security for each transmission.
The gateways are owned and managed by Globalstar's local and
regional service providers around the world. In the United
States, Globalstar USA, an indirect subsidiary of Vodafone
AirTouch, owns and operates the gateway in Clifton, Texas. In
Canada, Globalstar Canada, a partnership of Canadian Satellite
Communications (Cancom), Loral Space & Communications and
Vodafone AirTouch, owns and operates the gateways in High River,
Alberta and Smiths Falls, Ontario.
Globalstar's North American gateways cover the following
geographic areas:
-- High River, Alberta - covering Western Canada and the
Northwestern United States
-- Smiths Falls, Ontario - covering Eastern Canada and the
Northeastern United States
-- Clifton, Texas - covering the United States
Globalstar USA's target audience consists of individuals needing
cellular service in those areas not currently served by wireless
providers. The primary focus among those needing cellular
extension will be industrial vertical markets, including
utilities, natural resources, mining, maritime, government and
transportation.
