***G.lite Interoperability Demonstration at CES Points to
Consumer DSL
(January 10)

At CES 12 DSL equipment vendors demonstrated the interoperability
of their ADSL products based on the consumer-friendly G.lite
standard technology. All companies demonstrated G.lite
interoperability with fast retrain which allows G.lite modems to
optimize data and voice performance in the home by storing
profiles of multiple home phone line characteristics.

G.lite product interoperability among vendors has also become
more mature since Supercomm '99. G.hs, a standard protocol that
enables phone company central office equipment and customer DSL
modems to "handshake", or establish a connection, has become more
robust. As a result, telephone companies can provide one piece of
equipment that will support G.lite and full-rate (T1.413i2 and
G.dmt) modems dynamically.

DSL service based on G.lite standard technology has been deployed
in several international locations, including Singapore, Japan
and India. This milestone validates standards-based DSL
deployments as a worldwide low-cost solution for consumers.
Unlike the DSL solutions currently being offered by telephone
companies and CLECs, G.lite will offer no truck roll DSL service
that does not require a "paired" proprietary single vendor
solution. In addition, because G.lite will be first to market
with widely interoperable products, PC OEMs and retailers will
soon be able to offer standards-based DSL products to their
customers.

G.lite is a version of ADSL that accesses the Internet at up to
30 times the speed of the fastest 56K analog modems and is
specifically tailored for the consumer market segment. Continuing
the momentum of ADSL deployments, G.lite provides for a cost-
effective solution that reduces the complexity of an on-site
installation by reducing the need for new wiring and for a
special signal "splitter" that separates voice and data at the
user's home.
