***High Performing Hsinchu Park
(December)

The Hsinchi Science-based Industrial Park witnessed another
banner year in 1999 according to park administration sources. The
park's total production is expected to top US$18.99 billion in
1999, up 50 percent from last year. The Hsinchu Park, a
collection of 250 high-tech factories that have been an engine of
Taiwan's economic growth for 15 years, surprised many analysts by
shrugging off the effects of a power backout on July 29 and the
7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck central Taiwan on Sept. 21,
1999. With investment in the Hsinchu Park's companies continuing
to expand, overall production is expected to grow by between 25
and 30 percent in the year 2000.
