***Product Snapshot: Photoshop 4.0
by Jonathan Sunberg

In November of 1996, Adobe delivered version 4.0 of Photoshop. The new
version supports Win3.1, 95, NT, Macs and Power Macs. The newest
version's suggested retail price is $895 and the upgrade version costs
$149. Users who purchased Version 3.0, on or after September 9, 1996,
will receive a free upgrade to Version 4.0.

The new Photoshop offers 10 new features. These include adjustment
layers, action recording, a navigator palette, snap-to guides and
grids, a free transform tool, multicolor gradients, 48 new special
effect filters, digital watermarking, expanded web file format support,
and an improved interface.

Among these new features are two devices which have enabled Photoshop
to support Web development. The GIF89a Export module, which allows
users to convert RGB images to indexed-color GIF files for use in HTML
documents, and the Web palette, which displays 8-bit images in what
Adobe considers the most commonly used Web browser palette, enhance
image conversion from Photoshop to the Web.

WAVE tested the new 32-bit version on Windows95 and found the new
features, including a walk-through CD tutorial, very intuitive and user
friendly.
