0524.2 RFID Doldrums

***RFID: Plug-and-Play to Save the Day, Says ABI Research

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.
June 9, 2005

After the initial excitement around Wal-Mart's January 1, 2005 RFID deadline, things have gone a bit quiet. As ABI Research has noted in the past, a significant number of those suppliers have gone only as far as they absolutely had to in order to satisfy their mega-customer's basic requirements.

If -- as evidence from the consumer goods vertical market suggests -- many end-users are currently in a "wait and see" holding pattern, why is that the case and what will it take to get the RFID ball rolling?

According to ABI Research analyst Sara Shah, the answer can be summed up in three words: plug-and-play. "Leaving aside the important issues of cost and reliability," she says, "most of the RFID products available so far require a good deal of hard work for users to integrate them into their existing supply chain systems. Companies want to be able to plug an RFID reader or printer into their network and simply have it work. They want it to coexist with their own IT systems and to be able to manage RFID centrally without massive reconfiguration, extensive training, or the need to outsource."

So far, solutions capable of doing that have been scarce.

However, some RFID vendors are making a start. "A few startups have begun to address this need," notes Shah, "and new products from Symbol Technologies and Microsoft show this same trend of plug-and-play convenience." It is that kind of seamlessness, ABI Research believes, that will encourage end-users to move beyond "slap-and-ship" to the point where they will see a clear business case in favor of full-scale RFID implementation.

ABI Research's new study, "RFID Consumer Packaged Goods", will examine how RFID can provide a return on investment for consumer goods companies. It explores the reasons why they are unable to justify the investment now, and issues that may arise as they begin wide scale rollouts.

0524.3 Online Banking

***Bank of America Online Customers in Tennessee Are First in the Country to Get New Service to Protect Accounts and Identify Fraudulent Web Sites

CHARLOTTE, N.C.
June 14

Bank of America customers in Tennessee have a new way to help prevent fraud and identity theft with the launch of an industry-leading protection service they have received with their Online Banking. Tennessee customers are the first in the country to get the new service, called SiteKey, which is free. Customers pick one of thousands of images, write a brief phrase and select three challenge questions. The customer and the bank can pass that information securely back and forth to confirm each other's identity.

Using SiteKey is like getting a safe deposit box that takes two keys to open. Before the customer and the bank agree to open the box together, they confirm each other's identity.

Bank of America is the first major financial services company to provide this added level of security. The service was announced in May and is being rolled out across the country throughout the year.

Signing up for SiteKey takes just a few minutes and is free. The image, personal message and challenge questions work together to help:

- Confirm the Web site's validity. When customers log in to Online Banking, they can click on the SiteKey button to see their secret image and phrase. If the image and phrase don't appear, the customer could be at a fraudulent site. This capability targets a fraud called spoofing, and will help ensure customers are not fooled by fake versions of bankofamerica.com.

- Protect accounts. Someone trying to access an account from an unrecognized computer must answer a challenge question correctly. So even if a customer's ID and passcode have been stolen through spyware or a phony Web site, the thief still would have to answer a challenge question to get access to the account.

SiteKey is the newest way to use online banking to help prevent identity theft and fraud. Customers also can receive bills, pay bills, as well as view checks and statements online -- eliminating risks associated with sending items through the mail.

Customers who use online banking can detect fraud earlier by reviewing their account activity regularly, rather than waiting for a monthly statement in the mail. Bank of America offers a guarantee that protects customers against unauthorized transactions.

Here are more steps consumers can take to prevent fraud:

- Use safe computer behavior. Install protection such as firewalls, anti-virus software and anti-spyware software. Keep the protection and browsers updated. Don't download materials from unknown senders. Use unique passwords that are hard to guess and change them often.

- Confirm the validity of all requests for sensitive personal, financial or account information, particularly if they are made with an urgent or threatening tone. Consumers who get the request through e-mail should open a new browser window and type in the referenced Web address rather than clicking on links provided within the e-mail.

- Monitor accounts, credit reports and credit scores. Notify banks and credit agencies immediately of any unauthorized transactions.

- Take advantage of free bank services, such as direct deposit. Sign up for Verified by Visa, which allows consumers to pick a password that is necessary for online purchases with a credit card and Check Card.

- Do not share your IDs, passcodes or ATM passwords with anyone.

0524.4 Streamlined Travel

***Kinetics Provides Self-Serve Check-In Beyond the Airport; CheckinHere Solution Extends Check-in Convenience to Off-Airport Locations

LAKE MARY, Fla.
June 9, 2005

You no longer need to be in the airport to check in for your flight. Self-service travel leader Kinetics, a subsidiary of NCR Corporation, has announced CheckinHere, a new kiosk solution that provides multi-airline check-in, prints boarding passes and provides baggage services for passengers at off-airport locations such as hotels, car rental stations and cruise line ports.

The self-service solution uses a centralized service that unifies all of Kinetics' airline partners onto one screen for a consistent look and feel in every location for every carrier. CheckinHere requires minimal information technology resources and meets all Transportation Security Administration, International Air Transport Association and Common-User Self-Service requirements.

To use the solution, passengers select an airline and find their reservation by swiping a credit card, selecting a destination city or entering a confirmation number. They are then able to review their travel itinerary and print a boarding pass and receipt.

CheckinHere is already deployed in the Atlanta area as part of a hotel kiosk deployment, which allows guests to check in or out of the hotel, check in to specific airlines and print boarding passes on the spot.

Along with basic check-in functionality, CheckinHere allows passengers to retrieve multiple reservations, change their seats and select baggage-handling services, where available. CheckinHere can be deployed as a freestanding kiosk application or can run as an integrated component of the Kinetics ResortPort (hotel) or TouchPort (airport) kiosks. Future enhancements include adding and accessing frequent flyer data.

CheckinHere will be demonstrated in the NCR booth, number 1109, at the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC) in Los Angeles, June 21-23.

0524.5 ID Verification

***Digimarc's ID Validation Suite Enables Federal Agencies to Meet Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12

BEAVERTON, Ore.
June 13, 2005

Digimarc Corporation has announced that its Digimarc ID Validation Suite (IDVS) system has been updated to support new homeland security requirements for improving the validation of identity for federal employees and contractors who have access to federal buildings and information systems. Digimarc IDVS was introduced last month to help issuers of government IDs meet the goals of the REAL ID Act legislation for enhancing driver license security.

The Federal Information Processing Standard-201 (FIPS-201) for the Personal Identity Verification of Federal Employees and Contractors (PIV) was developed to satisfy the requirements of Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD 12), which calls for enhancing the identification and authentication of federal employees and contractors. This requires that federal government agencies have the operational capability to collect, verify and archive the documents presented to establish the identity of all current and new federal employees and contractors by Oct. 27, 2005. Such documents may include U.S. driver licenses or state-issued IDs, passports, Social Security cards, military IDs, resident alien cards, travel documents, etc. All current and new employees and contractors of federal agencies are subject to this new policy to ensure that credentials are properly issued.

The Digimarc IDVS system aids federal agencies in meeting the requirements of FIPS-201/PIV-1 by enabling the detection of falsified identity credentials such as driver licenses and passports and ensuring the authenticity of documents presented to establish a new or existing employee's identity. The system also archives those source or "breeder" identity documents for later analysis or investigative purposes. The Digimarc IDVS system determines whether an ID is genuine, altered or counterfeit by reading and authenticating multiple, machine-readable security features found in driver licenses, passports and other credentials such as IDMarc digital watermarks, barcodes, magnetic stripes, and optical variable image devices.

To further enhance the authentication process, the Digimarc IDVS software consolidates authentication results from multiple features and document designs into a secure archive for a more detailed view by authorized personnel. The system supports a customizable user interface, business rules and internal controls to ensure documents are correctly reviewed, verified and archived. The IDVS system maintains an audit trail of authentication data for later investigation and enables federal agencies to address requirements for retaining printed or electronic images of source documents presented.

Digimarc IDVS can be deployed on a stand-alone basis or integrated into new or existing identity verification, document inspection and credential issuance systems. This modular architecture and support for Microsoft .NET and XML standards enables Digimarc IDVS to be easily integrated into existing legacy systems and databases. Because of its flexible architecture, the Digimarc IDVS solution also enables agencies to choose from a range of Digimarc-certified hardware and software readers, including AssureTec, Intelli-Check and Syscan, and configurable software modules to fit particular workflows and budgets. Additionally, the solution can be customized for integration with legacy hardware systems.

Availability

Digimarc's IDVS solution is available to federal government issuers of IDs and system integrators. For additional product information and availability of compatible hardware devices that work with the Digimarc IDVS system, visit Digimarc's website.

0524.8 Tapeless Videocams

***No Tape, No Disc - New JCV Camcorders Feature Large Capacity, Built-In Hard Disk Drives

NEW YORK
June 14, 2005

JVC has announced a new series of camcorders that eliminates the need to carry tapes, discs or any media at all, yet can record up to seven hours of DVD movie-quality video. They also record more than 10.5 hours at a quality level comparable to a DVD camcorder’s 30-minute mode. The new JVC Everio G Series camcorders record to a built-in hard disk drive and will be available in 20 and 30 gigabyte (GB) versions, offering unprecedented camcorder storage capacity.

JVC’s initial Everio G offering consists of four models. The popularly-priced GZ-MG20 with 20GB hard disk and the GZ-MG30 with 30GB hard disk provide seven and 10.5 hours respectively of DVD camcorder-quality (30-minute mode) video. Step up versions with a 1.33 Megapixel CCD are the seven-hour 20GB hard disk GZ-MG40 and 10.5-hour 30GB hard disk GZ-MG50. To put the storage capacity in context, it would take 22 DVD camcorder discs (8 cm/1.4GB discs) to hold seven hours of video.

Despite the high capacity storage, Everio G camcorders are small enough and light enough to easily take anywhere. Each is truly palm-sized and weighs less than 14 oz. with the battery attached. Their design is similar to a MiniDV camcorder’s, which means that they’re comfortable to hold and operate, and include a large, 2.5-inch flip-out LCD monitor for easy recording.

Playback is easy, too, with multiple connections allowing convenient TV playback, dubbing to a VCR or DVD recorder, transfer to a PC or Apple Macintosh for DVD creation, editing, or posting to the Internet, or even burned directly without a PC to a full length movie DVD disc using an optional DVD burner.

The Everio G series GZ-MG50 and GZ-MG30 offer more than seven hours of storage at 9 Mbps, which is close to the maximum bit rate for DVD movie quality recording, or 10.5 hours at 6 Mbps, comparable to DVD Cam recordings. Two more modes are available for even more recording time. The entry level GZ-MG40 and GZ-MG20 offer an impressive 4.5 hours of storage at 9 Mbps, and more than seven hours at 6 Mbps. Either way, the high quality MPEG-2 recordings are in the same format used in DVD so there will be no quality loss when burning them to DVD, and no time- and quality-wasting conversion.

The benefits of recording video to a hard disk are the same benefits that have made hard disk-based audio players so popular — random access to quickly locate desired material, the ability to effortlessly delete unwanted material, and easily rearrange the playback sequence. What’s more, there’s no danger of accidentally recording over video a user wishes to keep.

Everio G Series models will be available in August at the following approximate prices:

GZ-MG20 $800
GZ-MG30 $900
GZ-MG40 $900
GZ-MG50 $1,000

0524.9 New Old Fonts

***Monotype Foundation Offers Limited Edition Prints of Original Type Drawings

WOBURN, Mass. & SALFORDS, Surrey, England
June 9, 2005

Reproductions of original type drawings are now available online from the Monotype Foundation, a new non-profit company dedicated to the worldwide advancement of the typographic arts. Proceeds from the sales will fund typographic initiatives such as educational scholarships and grants for libraries and museums.

The first in a series of limited edition prints features the Gill Sans Bold Extra Condensed typeface, available for $200 (about GBP 108) from the website. Eric Gill, the British typographer, sculptor and engraver created the design in 1937 as part of the Gill Sans typeface family. Inspired by the sans serif lettering by the calligrapher Edward Johnston in 1916 for the London Underground public transportation system, the Gill Sans typeface has been considered Gill's most enduring legacy to typography. Companies including AT&T and the British Broadcasting Corp. have incorporated the Gill Sans design into their brand identity programs. Gill Sans fonts are also part of the Mac OS X operating system which runs in millions of Macintosh computers.

Five hundred hand-numbered reproductions have been created of the original Gill Sans Bold Extra Condensed drawing, which is stored in an archive at the U.K. headquarters of Monotype Imaging in Salfords. The giclee digital printing process was used to create each 18 x 24 inch print on fine art matte paper. According to the Monotype Foundation, it's virtually impossible to distinguish the original from the reproduction. Gill's pencil titling and initials are visible, as are areas where he made hand-edited corrections. It's fascinating to view such primitive techniques, especially since Gill's typefaces in today's digital world are more popular than ever, 65 years after his death.

The Monotype Foundation was established as a vehicle to fund typographic initiatives that can make a difference to further the worldwide advancement the typographic arts. The Monotype Foundation is registered in England and Wales as a company limited by guarantee (no. 4909976).

Included with each print is a certificate of authenticity and a signed commentary by Michael Harvey, the British type designer, educator and author. Also included is an article about Gill by Sebastian Carter, the British designer, fine printer and writer on typography.
