Actions to Promote Continued Semiconductor Industry Growth World Semiconductor Council BUSAN, South Korea
May 13, 2004 The world's major semiconductor industries released a broad range of
policy recommendations to promote the long-term growth of the world semiconductor
industry. The World Semiconductor Council (WSC), representing the European, Japanese,
Korean, Taiwanese, and U.S. semiconductor industries, held its eighth
annual meeting in Busan, Korea, to address a number of public policy
issues, including intellectual property, environment, trade, and other
issues. The WSC created a new Intellectual Property (IP) Task force and adopted
a policy paper that sets out a multi-pronged approach to provide intellectual
property protection for layout designs of integrated circuits. This form
of IP protects the layout of circuits on a semiconductor chip, and is
included in the World Trade Organization's IP agreement. The WSC also
called on all governments and authorities to implement effective IP enforcement
measures in their jurisdictions and to fund their patent offices to insure
the timely and accurate issuance of patents. At last year's WSC Meeting, the industries noted that China imposes
a 17 percent value added tax (VAT) on semiconductors, but provides eligible
domestic producers with a rebate to lower the effective tax rate to a
level of 3 percent. China's practice of providing rebates to domestic
products while continuing to charge imports the full VAT became the subject
of a WTO case in March, and the first WTO consultations were held in
April. The WSC called upon the parties involved in the WTO consultations
on the VAT to reach a prompt resolution that leads to a 3 percent VAT
rate on all semiconductors regardless of origin. The WSC is firmly committed to sound, scientifically based, positive
environmental policies and practices. The group received reports on industry
efforts to reduce emissions of PFCs (perfluoro compounds), reduce energy
consumption, and share best practices on chemical management. Work will
continue on plans to develop a data collection program on energy usage,
communicate with equipment and materials suppliers on environment and
safety/health issues, and determine the feasibility of quantitative common
targets on environmental metrics. WSC will also review regulatory and
legislative issues, such as the European Union's Restriction on Hazardous
Substances directive (RoHS), that have a global impact on the industry.
The WSC received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate
Protection Award in 1998 for its efforts to reduce emissions of PFCs. The WSC also voiced support for other actions that would facilitate
consumer access to the latest semiconductor technologies at the lowest
costs. WSC recommendations included urging governments and authorities
to: avoid mandatory technical standards, and to follow WSC-specified
principles when standards are mandatory; prohibit the imposition of levies
on digital equipment and blank digital recording media; and treat multi-chip
integrated circuits the same as general integrated circuits in terms
of customs classification codes, thereby allowing them to remain tariff-free. The WSC also reiterated its desire to have the Chinese industry as a
WSC member, and agreed to take quick action when the Chinese industry
applies to join. http://www.semiconductorcouncil.org Return

Unsecured Wireless Networks at Major Network Event NetWorld+Interop 2004 Las Vegas LAS VEGAS
May 12, 2004 Unsecured communications, information theft, Denial of Service Attacks,
and high congestion limiting network performance characterized the wireless
communications at the Networld + Interop show this week, stated AirDefense,
the leader in 24x7 wireless LAN security monitoring. With more than 15,000
attendees to Network + Interop, one of the largest networking conferences
of the year, the wireless network was congested with unsecured wireless
devices and numerous security threats during the first day of the show. AirDefense studied the wireless LAN and Bluetooth traffic in a single
exhibit hall and identified more than 1000 unique wireless devices throughout
the day attempting to connect to 311 access points (APs). Despite the
apparent abundance of capacity, connecting to the networks was virtually
impossible due to the interference caused by secured and unsecured competition
for access. In an attempt to find connectivity, users abandoned good
security practices and exposed their communications, causing a pattern
of open communication followed by specific attacks on communication. The chief security officer of AirDefense observed that while this ratio
of APs to wireless stations appeared higher than normal, less than 50
percent of the access points were configured to carry traffic. The remaining
access points were established for demonstration purposes only, causing
interference on the show floor, flooding the airwaves with false connections.
This contributed to attendees' inability to stay connected to an access
point for long periods of time, or alternatively attempting to connect
to unsecured networks. The congested network and unstable connections
explained the poor network performance noted at the show. More importantly,
as users stations attempted to connect, they often went into ad hoc mode
or accidentally associated with other stations. Within these associations
AirDefense saw malicious activity including the launch of viruses and
what appeared to be theft of information. Throughout the day AirDefense tracked and identified usage patterns,
network bottlenecks and problematic stations and access points, indicative
of the interference and performance degradation. AirDefense further observed that most attendees used the b/g frequency
and the majority of them attempted to connect on only channels six, one
and 11. Not only were these the most crowded channels but they also were
the noisiest channels deterring attendees from using the network to its
full capacity. Particularly interesting was the interference or an attack
launched on the computer of one key note presenter, creating difficulties
with his presentation. Between conference sessions, AirDefense also noted a flood of activity
as attendees rushed to Hotspots for email, file transfer protocol and
Telnet purposes. Of these communications, at least 18 percent of users
used unsecured protocols for accessing wireless networks. Less than 14
percent of attendees connected to their corporate networks via a secure
virtual private network (VPN) or any form of encryption. Additionally, AirDefense research indicated numerous risks and threats
including: -- 96 Ad hoc networks comprised of 43 stations -- 89 separate attacks on different devices, many of these MAC spoofing
attacks -- 63 Denial of Service attacks -- 24 Soft access points -- 36 separate AirSnarfing, or impersonation of the Hotspot, attacks -- 15 individual Hotspotter attacks -- Three large mesh networks with an average of 10 personal computers
connected to each -- One attack on the closely situated Sears Service Toolbox (SST-PR-1) On Monday AirDefense announced its new Bluetooth monitoring tool, AirDefense
BlueWatch. During the first day of the show, AirDefense noted 249 Bluetooth
devices, the majority of them being cell phones and PDAs. The devices
launched 180 BlueJack attacks and 15 BlueSnarf attacks, both enabling
unauthorized users to gain access to the devices for potentially harmful
purposes, including downloading address books, email and capturing other
corporate information. http://www.airdefense.net Return

a Wide Angle Flexibility and Robust Features in a New Slim Design LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.
May 10, 2004 Canon's new PowerShot S60 digital camera combines five-megapixel resolution,
a newly developed 28-100mm UA wide-angle 3.6x zoom lens for creative
control and a slender shape for added portability that provides consumers
and photo enthusiasts alike with a full-featured tool for greater creative
latitude. New Wide Angle Lens The PowerShot S60 camera is equipped with a redesigned 3.6x zoom lens
that goes from a wide-angle focal length of 28mm to a telephoto of 100mm
(35mm film equivalent). This new lens features an Ultra high refractive
index, which makes it thin and compact. The Ultra high refractive index
Aspherical (UA) lens allows for a 28mm wide angle zoom while increasing
image quality and slimming the body of the camera for a sleek design. New Slim Design To allow for a more
refined look and easier use, the PowerShot S60 digital camera fashions
a new,
slimmer body with a redesigned smooth sliding
lens cover, transforming the camera's appearance when it is opened and
closed. Canon achieved this slimmer design by using the new UA wide-angle
lens. A traditional 28mm lens would produce a thicker camera, however,
due to the new UA lens the PowerShot S60 digital camera is slimmer than
its predecessor. The silver two-tone body provides a larger zoom lever
now found on the rear of the camera so users can easily maneuver with
their thumb. Additionally, the large, round control pad is located in
the rear center of the camera with the "SET" button in the
middle, allowing for effortless navigation and control. In order to increase the amount of photographs users can capture, Canon
developed a new high-capacity lithium-ion battery, the NB-2LH model,
which offers approximately 26% higher capacity than the previous lithium-ion
battery. Enhanced Features Armed with a faster start up time, the PowerShot S60 digital camera
sports a variety of enhanced features. Notably, the camera's macro function
allows photographers to shoot a subject from as close as 1.6 inch. The
camera's optional Tele-converter extends the focal length to 200mm. In addition, the PowerShot S60 digital camera also features: -- A 9-point AiAF autofocus system; -- Manual Controls including focus, exposure, and white balance; -- A 13 mode dial; -- Flexizone AF/AE; -- An Intelligent Orientation Sensor; and -- It accepts Type

Compact Flash Media. Underwater Possibilities With summer approaching,
Canon's new PowerShot S60 digital camera features an optional underwater
housing,
WP-DC40. Designed for capturing underwater
photos while snorkeling, in the pool, or just protect the camera while
boating or on the beach, the housing will be available in June. For the
underwater enthusiast, Canon will offer a new waterproof case weight
set (WW-DC1) that is compatible with all of its underwater housings.
Available in packs of four, these weights allow the camera to "stay
put" for steady underwater photography. To capture the best
underwater shots this summer, the PowerShot S60 digital camera includes
a new "underwater" preset
for the white balance. This feature automatically sets the camera to
the correct white
balance for underwater shooting so users do not have to worry about the
difficulty of operating manually. Quick and Easy Photo Printing When it comes to printing, consumers want it done quickly and easily.
The PowerShot S60 digital camera offers a range of new printing features
including Canon's Print/Share button, ID photo print, and movie print.
The Print/Share button now has a blue light indicator, which signals
the user when printing can begin, just by pressing the button. This feature
is operational when the camera is connected to a Canon Compact Photo
Printer, Canon Direct Photo Printer or PictBridge compliant printer and
set to Playback mode. When connected to a Compact Photo Printer, users
can crop the recorded image to the appropriate size prior to printing
ID photo size prints. The camera offers 28 different sizes providing
ID photo dimensions for use in countries around the world. The Movie
Print feature is also used when the camera is connected to a Compact
Photo Printer. It prints a series of still images from a recorded movie
onto a single sheet in the form of an index print. The PowerShot S60 digital camera also offers a Direct Transfer feature,
which allows users to instantly transfer images--one at a time or all
at once--from the camera to a Windows computer using a USB connection. http://www.usa.canon.com Return

Factor Tops List of What Consumers Love Most about Digital Photography DULLES, Va.
May 11, 2004 It's not the hottest page-turner or coolest PDA that most vacationers
will be packing for their summer vacation this year. According to America
Online's Digital Pictures Survey of digital camera owners, more than
one-half of the respondents, 54%, won't leave for vacation without this
hot little item: their digital camera. The choice ranked significantly
higher than sunscreen, a good book, a video camera, an address book,
a digital music player and PDA device. The survey, which was conducted for AOL by Digital Marketing Services
(DMS), uncovered additional findings and insights into consumer digital
camera habits, including reasons for going digital, frequency of use
and favorite online photo activities. According to the survey, the most
popular benefit of going digital is the instant gratification of seeing
an image right away. Thirty-two percent of respondents identified this
as what they like most about their digital camera. The ability to print
images whenever they want follows at 19% while the ability to share images
easily rounds out the top three at 17%. The survey also found that overwhelmingly
the preferred way to share these memorable photos with family and friends
is online via e-mail. More than 70% of respondents share images this
way. America Online's Digital Photos Survey also uncovered other key findings
regarding consumer digital camera use, photo habits and changing attitudes
about digital cameras including: Digital Cameras Rule! - Close to one-third, 31%, of younger respondents (18-49), say they
take pictures several times a week; however, more than 80% of all respondents
say they take pictures at least once a month. - Among those respondents with multiple cameras, digital film cameras
are used most often than other types of cameras. Seventy-one percent
of respondents said they use their digital film camera regularly or occasionally. - About one-fourth of those surveyed, 29%, received their digital camera
as a gift; the next biggest reason for purchasing a digital camera was
an upcoming vacation. - Over a quarter of respondents, 27%, say they take photos with their
digital cameras 100% of the time while a third say they take pictures
with their digital cameras most of the time. - More than half of those surveyed, 64%, believe it is easier to use
a digital camera now than in the last few years. In addition, 74% of
those surveyed believe that the picture quality has improved. Today's Digital Dark Room: Home - Approximately 70% of those surveyed use a home printer to print their
pictures. - The ability to print pictures whenever they want is the second most
popular feature of digital cameras (right behind the instant gratification
factor of seeing an image right away). - Thirty percent of those surveyed print their pictures at least once
a week, while 42% print them at least once a month. Digital Photos in the Broadband Media Era - More than 70% of those surveyed share their pictures via e-mail and
about one-fifth of respondents also share them via instant messages.
Sharing images via instant message is particularly popular with younger
respondents. Close to one third, 29%, of respondents aged 18 to 34, IM
photos to friends and family. - The two top digital media activities digital camera users do with
their photos are creating screensavers on their PC, 37%, and creating
personal photo albums, 34%. - Other emerging popular activities include burning digital photo albums
on CDs, 29%, creating digital slide shows, 23%, and posting pictures
on online auction sites, 21%. - Younger respondents (18-34) also indicated particular interest in
using their digital pictures to customize screensavers for their mobile
phone and posting pictures on online dating services. Close to one in
ten respondents between the age of 18 and 34 identified these two activities
as some of the things they do with digital photos. Picture Storage Made Simple - In terms of storage, 45% keep all their digital pictures on their
computers' hard drive, 33% store them on other digital media, and 12%
print them and organize them in a photo album. - About 30% of respondents upload pictures from their camera at least
once a week, while 39% upload them about once a month. Summer 2004: Time for Family and Vacations - Over 70% of those surveyed say they will likely photograph family
this summer. - Over one-third of respondents, 36%, say that vacations are their favorite
occasion to use their digital cameras. - Beyond using their digital camera to capture memorable moments with
family members and friends, the next most popular reason people take
photographs is for a holiday card/invitation (online and printed), 34%,
followed by tasks specific for their work/business, 30%, items to post
on an online auction, 30%, archiving valuable/irreplaceable items in
their home, 26%, and for a school project, 19%. Methodology This survey was conducted from April 8 through April 12, 2004, through
OpinionPlace, an online research site operated by DMS. OpinionPlace utilizes
real-time, randomized assignment of respondents to surveys based on a
scientifically proven process. A total of 511 respondents were interviewed.
The screening qualifications for this study were males and females who
personally own and use a digital camera. Return

Mail Security for SMTP 4.0 Protects Enterprises From Malicious Threats,
Spam and Unwanted Content CUPERTINO, Calif.
May 10, 2004 Symantec Corp. announced Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.0, an email
security solution that integrates virus protection, spam prevention and
email content enforcement as it provides high performance, single-pass
scanning of Internet email (SMTP) messages. Symantec Mail Security for
SMTP 4.0 offers enterprises a multi-layered approach to stop viruses,
spam and unwanted content at the earliest point of entry on to a network,
the SMTP gateway layer. Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.0 provides a single install and a
clean, intuitive management interface along with the following new functionality
and feature enhancements: -- Mass Mailer Cleanup:
Mass mailer worms automatically generate their own email message along
with
lethal payloads to spread rapidly to other
unsuspecting email users. Instead of eliminating just the infected attachment,
the mass mailer cleanup feature safely eliminates the entire message;
thereby reducing the volumes of "viral spam" which can clog
mail systems and generate helpdesk calls from concerned end-users. -- Improved Antispam Heuristics: The neural-networks-based Heuristic
Antispam Engine has been further enhanced to detect today's constantly
changing spam content. In addition, regular spam definition updates will
be provided through Symantec's LiveUpdate service. -- Auto-Generated Whitelist: The solution automatically learns who the
trusted sources are for incoming Internet email which allows the system
to avoid scanning known legitimate content using real-time blacklists
and the Heuristic Antispam Engine; thereby dramatically reducing the
chances of false positive detections. In addition, whitelist support
has been enhanced to include support for email addresses and domain wildcards. -- Score-Based Spam Handling: Greater flexibility is provided for handling
heuristically detected spam messages based on the spam probability value. -- Custom Filtering Rules: Custom message body rules can be created
to help combat spam and control other unwanted content in email. -- Disclaimers: Administrators can enforce use of legal disclaimers
in email by automatically inserting custom text into outbound messages. Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.0 is part of Symantec's mail security
family of enterprise solutions which includes Symantec Mail Security
for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Mail Security for Domino. As critical
components of Symantec's multi-tier protection offering, Symantec mail
security solutions offer enterprise customers tightly integrated, single
install solutions to protect messaging and collaboration environments,

ABI Research OYSTER BAY, NY
May 12, 2004 Micro fuel cell (MFC) technology will power nearly 15% of the world's
laptop computers as early as 2012, according to a recent ABI Research
study. The new power source should be seen in a limited number of laptops and
PDAs, and in certain niche applications, in 2005. ABI Research's projections
indicate a trial production of 2,000 units next year, mostly in Japan
and in the US. Though the technology's initial promise was demonstrated
by US-based companies, Japanese firms have taken the lead more recently. After a successful rollout, companies will be able to scale up manufacturing
capacity rapidly in successive years, assuming essential codes and standards
are in place. Worldwide MFC shipments may then reach 120 million units
by 2012. The Director of Energy Research observed that not everything is a bed
of roses in the micro fuel sector. Most of the information that comes
from companies is still not verifiable due to the emerging nature of
the technology. This makes it hard to evaluate the sector's true status
but their research indicates that micro fuel cells will be powering 13.5%
of laptops by 2012. Although most of the companies have been secretly showing their working
units to product vendors, no major vendor has yet signed a declaration
of agreement. One of the study's significant findings is that if micro fuel cells
are going to enter commercial markets in even a small way in 2005, manufacturers
must demonstrate their prototypes along with efficient refueling mechanisms
before the end of 2004. Will consumers adopt MFCs? Mass market acceptance may be restrained
if refueling or replacing fuel cartridges carries a high cost. But the
model has worked for the inkjet printer and ejectable razor industries,
and companies such as Gillette, BIC and Tokai are showing interest in
distribution. The ABI Research
study "Micro Fuel Cells: Market Challenges and
Opportunities for Cameras, Laptops, PDAs and Wireless / Mobile Devices" analyzes
five major end user applications (wireless handsets, laptops, PDAs, digital
camera/camcorders, and mobile computing units) by technology and by region
(North America, Europe, and Japan). End user market segment growth projections
are dissected, along with MFC penetration into these applications. The
study details business issues from both consumer and vendor standpoints,
along with those of retail refueling companies. http://www.abiresearch.com Return
