***Silicon Graphics and
MicroStrategy Team to Provide Integrated Data Mining/OLAP Solution
(October 28)
Silicon Graphics, Inc. and MicroStrategy announced that they
will jointly develop and market an integrated visual data mining/on-line
analytical processing (OLAP) solution. The integration is designed
to accelerate time to discovery, or insight, for workers in such
data-intensive industries as government, financial services,
pharmaceutical, biotechnology, retail and manufacturing.
Silicon Graphics will combine its data mining and visualization
software, MineSet, with MicroStrategy's DSS Suite. This is claimed
to be a scalable client/server data mining solution for extracting
information from data warehouses and revealing hidden patterns
through intuitive, interactive, 3D visualizations. The current
offering of MineSet adds 64-bit support for large (more than
2GB) memory and multi-processing performance. It also incorporates
a new API plug-in architecture for third-party algorithms, making
it possible to integrate users' decision support tools into MineSet.
MicroStrategy's decision support platform enables users to
query and analyze the detailed, transaction-level databases,
turning data into business intelligence. In addition to supporting
internal enterprise users, MicroStrategy's products extend DSS
beyond corporate boundaries to customers, partners and supply
chain constituencies through a broad range of pull and push technology
such as the Internet, e-mail, telephones, pagers and other wireless
communications devices.

***WAVE Comments
This is another important announcement for 3D technology and
its application to business needs. It is another example of what
we have been calling Enterprise Visualization. In this case a
DSS tool has been combined with 3D to gain insights into enterprise
data. Unfortunately this software combination appears restricted
to UNIX but if such tools are successful they will migrate to
the PC.

***Microsoft to Bring
Windows NT 4.0 Platform to Embedded Market (November
3)
Microsoft has announced it will release a new version of the
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system to address the needs
of embedded systems vendors. This product is based on Windows
NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 and called Windows NT Embedded 4.0.
As a complement to Windows CE, Windows NT Embedded 4.0 poses
many design advantages for embedded solutions that are highly
interconnected, require full Win32 binary compatibility, and
are tightly integrated with Microsoft BackOffice family products
in line-of-business systems.
Features of Windows NT Embedded 4.0
· Headless support. This enables a new class of devices
for
Windows NT that run without a mouse, keyboard or display device.
· Diskless operation support. FLASH Media support, a Write
Filter driver and a CD Boot driver enable a lower-cost, more
reliable embedded device that boots and operates without a physical
disk drive and from read-only media such as FLASH or CD-ROMs.
· Remote management infrastructure. This enables embedded
systems to be remotely managed, configured and updated, reducing
administrative and management costs and improving integration
with an existing network infrastructure.
· Embedded-ready tools. Tools such as Target Designer
for selecting Windows NT platform components and the Component
Designer for adding application and third-party components to
a system simplify development of unique embedded solutions and
devices.
A broad beta of Windows NT Embedded 4.0 is scheduled for release
in the first quarter of 1999. Pricing and packaging information
will be announced at a later date.

***ACIS Enhanced FLO/MCAD
Software Accelerates Thermal Analysis Process (November
2)
Spatial Technology and Flomerics Limited (United Kingdom),
announced ACIS - enabled FLO/MCAD. Flomerics integrated the advanced
3D solid modeling functionality of ACIS in FLO/MCAD, a software
module that generates simplified thermal model equivalents from
complex MCAD geometrical models. With the simplified 3D models,
design engineers can examine and interpret thermal properties
of MCAD models using Flomerics' FLOTHERM thermal analysis software.
FLO/MCAD intelligently filters complex geometry data, while
preserving the volume or surface area as appropriate, to produce
simplified thermal equivalents. FLO/MCAD "decomposes"
the model data automatically into Flotherm primitives for use
in Flomerics' FLOTHERM thermal analysis software. This simplification
process takes only a few minutes of CPU time, and is controlled
by user-defined tolerances throughout.
FLO/MCAD reads SAT format models created in over 175 ACIS
applications, including AutoCAD and Mechanical Desktop by Autodesk
Inc. and SolidDesigner by CoCreate, a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard
Company.
FLO/MCAD also reads IGES files. The next release of ACIS-enabled
FLO/MCAD, slated for first quarter of 1999, will incorporate
the ACIS Healing Husk from Spatial. Advanced Healing technology
will enable users to repair inconsistencies or inaccuracies in
IGES models.

***Thomson & Thomson's
Namestake.com Introduces Free Online Advertising Monitoring Tool
(October 26)
Thomson & Thomson has announced a tool to help marketers
monitor and protect the integrity of their brand names in conjunction
with keyword purchases on search engines. The tool, called Bannerstake,
is available for free and allows users to type in a keyword and
in return receive a list of the banner advertisements that have
been purchased on each of the search engines associated with
that word. The product can also be used to gather information
about competitors' keyword purchases.
The product was designed because many companies are concerned
with the fact that online advertising is largely unregulated
and has no existing standards. This has resulted in companies
using other companies' brands/trademarks as search engine keywords
to ensure that their banner advertising is shown in searches.

Releases Java Speech API 1.0 Specification for the Java Platform(October
26)
Sun Microsystems announced the availability of the 1.0 specification
of the JavaPlatform. The Java Speech API specifies a single interface
for development and deployment of a wide range of speech technology
applications on the desktop, in small portable devices and for
telephony servers. The Java Speech API was developed through
an open-standards process, with significant contributions from
leading platform, speech and Java technology vendors (endorsements
from API partners and leading speech technology vendors in addendum).
Implementations based upon the Java Speech API are already available
from IBM and Lernout & Hauspie; other vendors will release
implementations in the near future.
Java Speech API enables developers to create applications
for desktop productivity, application management, speech-enabled
interfaces for users with disabilities, web page enhancement,
dictation and proofreading, and telephony call center applications.
In addition the Java Speech API can be used with the PersonalJava
and EmbeddedJava platforms to enable speech application development
for portable and small computing devices.
In conjunction with this initiative, Sun is releasing the
1.0 specification for the Java Speech Grammar Format. This provides
a standard text format for defining grammars for cross-platform,
cross-vendor control of speech recognizers. About Speech Technology
Speech technology enhances and improves the way people communicate
with computers and other devices. Speech recognition (converting
spoken words to text) and synthesis (creates synthetic speech
from text) can be used with traditional computer interfaces,
telephony call centers and user interfaces in small portable
devices.
