Panel Display
(September 28)
Number Nine has teamed with Silicon to combine Silicon Graphics
1600SW digital flat panel monitor (introduced today by Silicon
Graphics) with the Number Nine Revolution IV-FP graphics
accelerator. Using the second-generation OpenLDI high-resolution
digital interface standard, the Revolution IV-FP delivers a
digital video signal to the flat panel monitor. The monitor will
support resolutions as high as 1600 x 1024 pixels with 16.7
million colors. The SuperWide 17.3 inch monitor is capable of showing two full
pages of information in a side by side format and its 16:10
screen format is similar to High- Definition Television (HDTV).
The 1600SW offers a dot pitch of .235 mm., producing 110 dpi. The
display is 7 3/8 inches deep with the base and only 3 inches deep
in the wall- mount configuration. It weights 16 pounds (8 pounds
without the base).Number Nine enhanced its Ticket To Ride IV graphics processor
(used on the Revolution IV-FP) to provide a direct digital
output. The solution pack will be offered to systems OEMs and to end-
users through Number Nine's distribution channels and carry an
MSRP of $2795.The Solution Pack is expected to be available early in the fourth
quarter of 1998. The Revolution IV-FP is available for both PCI
and AGP 2X- equipped computers running Windows 95, Windows 98 or
Windows NT 4.0. Future support for the Apple Macintosh is
planned.http://www.nine.com
http://www.sgi.com
Number Nine has been hurting for some time. The signs include a
shortage of both income and cash and a stock price at 2 ½, which
is just 50% of its 52 week high. First Call reports that no
analysts are tracking the company. With this announcement Number
Nine continues to get closer to SGI. This has been happening
progressively over the last 4 months. WAVE suggests that it is
time to watch for an acquisition.

***PLATINUM Acquires COSMO Software
and Team
(September 9)
In September, PLATINUM integrated the talent and technology of
Cosmo, a unit of Silicon Graphics into its company.Silicon Graphics will continue to support the IRIX versions of
the Cosmo product line: Cosmo Code, Cosmo Worlds, Cosmo Player
and Cosmo Create. For details on engaging support for these IRIX-
based products, users should point their browsers tohttp://www.sgi.com/software/cosmo
PLATINUM technology is working on enterprise computing solutions
using 3D visualization. PLATINUM plans to extend and consolidate
its visual computing product line with the products it has
acquired from Cosmo and Intervista. PLATINUM also plans to offer
a developer's kit.http://3dbiz.platinum.com
How indirect can one get? This announcement virtually concealed
the fact that PLATINUM purchased the remnants of the COSMO
failure. It has been well known that SGI struggled to sell off
COSMO and finally an announcement has been made. Why did not SGI
make an announcement - maybe they were too embarrassed?
Hopefully PLATINUM can succeed with the technology where SGI
failed.

DiviCom Inc. has introduced InterSect, an interactive set-top box
controller that allows cable operators to deliver TCP/IP traffic
to devices such as set-top boxes. InterSect will make it possible
for cable operators to offer interactive applications such as Web
browsing, e-mail, stock ticker, and electronic program guides.InterSect is designed to control DVB/DAVIC based set-top boxes.
DVB and DAVIC are worldwide standards organizations working to
define specifications for digital video implementation. The
InterSect controller supports the out-of-band DVB/DAVIC
specification allowing cable operators to deliver video and data
at the same time.An example of this is a service in which a subscriber could
browse through information on a player while simultaneously
watching that player in a sports match, without an additional
payment. The controller meets current cable transmission requirements and
has the following features:
DVB/DAVIC Compliance
Management capabilities for both central and distributed
diagnostic control (SNMP is the key protocol)
Modular/reliable system design with a hot-swappable power supply
Supports a variety of set-top boxes

integrated solutions by the end of 1998.http://www.divi.com
***Forrester's Technographics Detects
Shifts in Consumers' PC-
Buying Patterns
(September 4)
Forrester Research suggests that low-income households -
households earning less than $35,000 annually -- will be the
leading source of first-time PC purchasers in 1999. Meanwhile,
repeat buyers -- either replacing an old PC or buying an
additional PC -- will fuel the market for more powerful PCs and
premium Internet services.Next year, PC buyers will fall into three broad categories:
first-time buyers, replacement buyers, and additional buyers.
First-time buyers will account for 40% of the home PC market,
followed by replacement buyers (36%) and additional buyers (24%).A profile of first-time purchasers includes more women (59%) and
less 6 education -- only 37% have attended college -- than in the
past. In contrast, the majority of repeat buyers are male and 65%
have some college education. Compared to repeat buyers, first-
time buyers also are less likely to be married and have children.
The additional-buyer household consists of 3.3 members while the
first-time household has only 2.4 people.An estimated 72% of first-time buyers don't use a PC at work.
Until recently, more than 70% of PC owners had computer
experience before buying a home PC. Now the primary objective for
many first-time buyers is to learn the technology. Because these
consumers are PC neophytes, PC makers, software vendors, and
Internet service providers should be prepared to help these new
users via their call centers and help lines.Replacement buyers want a more complete PC experience than new
users. They are less sensitive to prices and more attuned to
processing power, modem speeds, and multimedia capabilities.
Because the No. 1 purchase motivation for these buyers is to go
on-line, PC makers should bundle Internet access with their PC
packages. Similarly, replacement buyers should be a prime target
for broadband services from access providers.Nearly half of the surveyed additional buyers indicated that they
want to use their new computers to help educate their children.
While these users will be somewhat less price-sensitive, PC
makers should consider networking options that enable multi-PC
households to share resources like printers and Internet access.
The added demand for shared Internet time also makes additional
buyers good candidates for broadband services."The PC Market In 1999" study uses Forrester's Technographics
segmentation scheme, which classifies consumers by the
motivations, attitudes, and income that they bring to their
adoption and use of technology. The data was drawn from a survey
of 120,000 North American consumers and was conducted with The
NPD Group in the fall of 1997.http://www.forrester.com
***Playdium Entertainment Releases
Second Quarter Financial
Results
(August 31)
Playdium Entertainment Corporation released its unaudited interim
consolidated financial results for the six months ended June 30,
1998.Throughout 1997 and to February 5, 1998, the Company operated The
Sega Playdium Partnership in partnership with Sega GameWorks
L.L.C. The principal business of the Partnership includes
operating part of 'Playdium @ Square One', located in
Mississauga, Ontario, as well as fifteen game center operations
in place at the end of 1997. The Playdium facility, in
Mississauga, Ontario, comprising approximately 11.5 acres,
includes an indoor component of interactive games and
attractions, which is operated by the Partnership, as well as
outdoor activities (such as go-karts, rock climbing and challenge
mini-golf) operated by the Company. On February 5, 1998, the Company acquired from Sega GameWorks its
50 percent interest in the Partnership in exchange for 3,380,000
common shares in the Company, a common share purchase warrant
entitling the holder thereof to acquire up to 1,000,000 common
shares at an exercise price of $6.75 per common share, as well as
certain pre-emptive rights, registration rights and non-compete
provisions. The consolidated results of operations to June 30,
1998 therefore include the results of the Partnership to February
5, 1998, on a proportionate basis, and all of the Partnership's
operating results thereafter. The consolidated balance sheets at
June 30, 1998 includes all of the accounts of the Company and the
Partnership.Consolidated revenues for the six months ended June 30, 1998 were
$5.62 million as compared with $2.76 million for the six months
ended June 30, 1997. The contribution margin on these revenues
was 45.7 percent for the six months ended June 30, 1998 or $2.57
million as compared with $1.03 million for the same period in
1997. General and administrative expenses were $3.63 million for
the six months ended June 1998 versus $1.45 million for the first
half of 1997. The increase was primarily a result of the
expansion of the head office staff, during the balance of 1997
and first half of 1998, to manage the roll out of future
'Playdium' locations. The Company has reported a loss before interest, taxes and
amortization of $2.58 million for the first half of 1998, which
includes $1.18 million in software research and development
expenses. This compares with a loss before interest, taxes and
amortization of $421,000 for the six months ended June 30, 1997.
The net loss reported for the first half of 1998 is $8.90 million
as compared with $3.02 million for the first half of 1997.
Included in the net loss for the first six months of 1998 and
1997 is amortization of $6.15 million and $2.16 million,
respectively. Amortization in 1998 includes goodwill amortization
of $3.1 million, relating to the acquisition of the Partnership
interest. The goodwill is being amortized over twenty-four months
on a straight-line basis from the date of acquisition.General and administrative expenses for the three months ended
June 30, 1998 of $2.06 million compare with $1.57 million in the
first three months of 1998. A net loss of $5.13 million for the
three months ended June 30, 1998 compares with a net loss of
$3.77 million for the first quarter of 1998. The increase in the
net loss by approximately $1.36 million for the second quarter is
primarily a result of: an increase in amortization expense by
approximately $946, 000 (relating to goodwill amortization for
three full months); a write-down of capital assets by $215,000,
as a result of replacing existing computer systems with a new
point-of-sale and debit card system and increased general and
administrative expenses.Operating activities for the first six months of 1998 have used
cash of $2.21 million as compared with $303,000 for the first
half of 1997. Investing activities of $25.8 million for the first
half of 1998 represent capital asset additions of $4.78 million
and the acquisition of the interest in the Partnership for $21.02
million. Financing activities primarily included the issuance of
common shares and common share purchase warrants for $20.88
million, in connection with the acquisition of the interest in
the Partnership. Working capital at June 30, 1998 was reported at
$12.92 million versus $22.61 million at June 30, 1997.Playdium Entertainment Corporation is the leader in the
introduction of large-scale location based entertainment centres
in Canada and is dedicated to developing and operating
entertainment centres worldwide.
***Cadence to Acquire Ambit
(September 3)
Cadence Design Systems announced that it has agreed to acquire
Ambit Design Systems. Ambit, a privately-held company and
currently an OEM partner of Cadence, offers product for synthesis
and timing analysis that specifically addresses the requirements
of multi-million gate, "block-based" designs typical of SOC
devices. The acquisition of the Ambit BuildGates technology will
give Cadence provide a suite of tools and associated design flows
required for SOC applications.Cadence will pay $260 million in cash and the transaction will be
accounted for under the purchase method of accounting. The
acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both
companies and is subject to regulatory and Ambit shareholder
approval. It is expected that the majority of the more than 100 Ambit
employees, including its R&D team, will join Cadence. Last year
Cadence and Ambit signed OEM and joint development agreements
that enabled Cadence to sell Ambit's BuildGates synthesis product
and began developing an integrated front- to-back SOC solution.
In addition, the BuildGates product has been used by the Cadence
Design Services organization to perform several complex deep
submicron (DSM) SOC designs. The Ambit technology targets a next-generation approach to
synthesis which has the ability to synthesize very large blocks
in one run and address chip-level timing issues, both critical
requirements for complex SOC design. Unlike first- generation
synthesis tools, BuildGates addresses the unique requirements of
SOC and facilitates the transition to DSM process geometries
through which system- chips are manufactured.Specifically, BuildGates has an ability to handle large designs;
an understanding of timing issues that occur in interconnect-
heavy DSM designs; and tight links to the physical implementation
processes for IC design. Its unique architecture supports a
block-based design/design re-use methodology, complementing the
Cadence overall strategy for offering a design flow enabling
integration of multiple intellectual property (IP) blocks on a
single chip.http://www.cadence.com
